Comandău is the easternmost settlement of historical Hungary. Thus, it is almost entirely inhabited by Hungarians: 95 per cent of inhabitants are Hungarians. The school of the village provided education in Hungarian for 103 children. But in January 9th, after the education was completed at 3pm, and the children left home, for an unknown reason, around 4:30pm, a villager realized that the top of the school was smoking. The first people who arrived to the school only saw a very dense black smoke and all of the sudden, the roof burst into flames. Within couple of minutes, around 300 people gathered to help and stop the fire, and within 30 minutes they evacuated the school. One of the father of the children stopped the fire on the roof by breaking it off. Then the firemen arrived. One part of the school and its library were entirely burnt down with 9 thousand books in it. Unfortunately, the IT lab with 15 computers, the school’s archive with all the documents from the year 1920, the storageroom with sport equipments and folk costumes, the bathrooms, the boiler room, the teacher’s room, the director’s room, the kitchen and three classrooms were all burnt down.
The school continued teaching the children at the remaining places from January 16th, but it is waiting for any kind of help. Hungarian Baptist Aid, according to request, started to put together a load of donations to replace one part of the books of the library.
